  • Be cautious of pickpocketing in crowded areas like trams or tourist spots.

Medical and Medical Insurance

  • The US government does NOT pay for medical bills. Be aware that US Medicare does not apply overseas.

Good medical care is available, but facilities may be limited outside urban areas. Public hospitals offer services at lower costs than private hospitals.

Payment is expected upon admission to private hospitals.

  • Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments.
  • If traveling with prescription medication, check here to ensure the medication is legal in Portugal.
  • Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

Information about an Emergency Medical Card is available here.

Visas

Passports are required by all to enter Portugal unless you are an EU citizen with a valid national ID card. Visit here for a list of the EU countries. Visit here to see if you need to apply for a visa based on your citizenship.

Currency

The official currency in Lisbon is the Euro. The exchange rate fluctuates daily. Many restaurants, shops, and taxis ONLY accept cash.

If you would like to have Euros in hand before departing from your country, you can order them through your bank (most likely for a fee). One of the best ways to get local currency is to use a debit card in an ATM. It is wise to notify your bank and credit card issuer that you will be traveling to Lisbon and to determine any transaction fees for purchases or ATM withdrawals. Don’t forget to include any connecting airports.

It is advisable to keep receipts of the currency exchanged in case it is necessary to convert Euros back into dollars before leaving the country.

Credit card companies charge merchants for their service, which means that when you pay with a credit card the merchant gets less than when you pay in cash. Small businesses in Portugal often operate on a thin margin, and therefore much prefer cash.

Mastercard, Visa, and American Express are widely accepted IF an establishment accepts credit cards. If you are bringing an American Express, you may want to bring a second type of card in case an establishment does not accept American Express.

Lisbon, like most of Portugal, does not widely accept traveler's checks; it is highly recommended to avoid using them as they are difficult to exchange, and most businesses will not accept them.

Electric and Plug Outlet Requirements

Portugal uses the Type F plug. Type F electrical plugs used in Portugal are commonly referred to as a Schuko plug.
