In October of 2005, a delegation from the Association for Behavior Analysis International visited the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan with the purpose of exploring and promoting the long-term development of behavior analysis in the region. During their visit the delegation met with several prominent figures in government, education, and military including a visit with Her Royal Highness, Princess Muna Al Hussein. A main topic of interest discussed during these meetings was the establishment of higher education programs in behavior analysis designed to train practitioners and educators. In response to these concerns, the President of the Jordanian University of Science and Technology (JUST), unveiled his plan to establish the first Middle Eastern Master's degree program in Applied Behavior Health Analysis.
The program has currently been in existence for almost two years and is housed in the School of Nursing Program at JUST. The purpose of this business meeting is to provide attendees with information about living and working in the first Middle Eastern graduate program in behavior analysis. Counseling is traditionally a field focused on working with normal people with problems. Coaching is a field identified as working with people who desire to reach a specific goal. Behaviorism has had considerable influence in both areas. The Behavioral Coaching and Behavioral Counseling Special Interest Group is devoted to preserving the tradition of behaviorism in counseling and coaching. Our initial business will be to elect SIG officers and plan an agenda for the upcoming year. In addition, since several of our members have identified areas of need, this meeting will be a workgroup meeting. The primary agenda will be to develop guidelines for behavioral coaches. In addition, several members have expressed an interest in developing a process by which behaviorists in counseling can be identified for insurance companies. Many insurance companies seek people with behavioral expertise in problem areas such as marital difficulties, addictions, as well as short term problems such as depression and adjustment problems for those faced by veterans returning from war. The SIG will set out to define a process by which counselors can identify their behavioral expertise. Finally, we will discuss the possibility of releasing a journal in the upcoming year. |

Increasing trends in technology have meant more assessments, interventions, and research are employing the latest technology to help consumers. Although there are a great deal of technology-based tools being purchased and implemented in schools, homes, workplaces, and in the community, many of these tools are not based on the principles of behavior analysis and thus, do not necessarily offer what they are intending. Several products exist that are grounded in applied behavior analysis (ABA) and it is expected that a large increase will be seen in the upcoming years. The purpose of the Behavioral Technology SIG is to increase awareness around technology in ABA, promote and educate ABA through the use of technology, discuss standards for product development and implementation for the ABA community, and to provide a forum for those interested in technology in ABA for sharing ideas and developing accepted practices for this type of ABA. This new SIG hopes to bring together a larger group of members, publish a new website in 2009, and plan for presentations on this topic at future ABAI events. |
